Sensei Michael JohnsonInstructor and President ASAI

Sensei Michael Johnson Nanadan (7th Dan, ASAI) and ASAI president became interested in martial arts while in the military. He began formal training in Shotokan Karate with Hidetaka Nishiyama (9th Dan, JKA-AAKF) at the University of California, San Diego.  While continuing to train with Master Nishiyama he also trained under Sensei Lester Ingber (7th Dan, JKA). While working on his Doctorate in the late 1970s, he trained with the UC Berkeley Karate Club and other Clubs in Oakland California. In 1981 Sensei Johnson began training at the Mountain View California Dojo. In 1982 while at the Mt View dojo he met Shihan Kousaku Yokota (8th Dan, WJKA), who continues to be his Sensei. From 1984 to 1996 he trained exclusively with Shihan Yokota at the Redwood City California Karate Club. In 1997 Sensei Johnson moved to the Central Valley where he was fortunate to train until 2004 under Sensei Mathew Thomas (5th Dan, ISKF) who is a respected competitor and kumite champion. In 2009 he began training with a long time associate Sensei Emile Valdez (5th Dan, ISKF) at Sacramento Shotokan, and he continues to train with, and support the club when in town.

Sensei Johnson received his Shodan (1st degree black belt) from Teruyki Okazaki (9th Dan, ISKF), his Nidan (2nd Dan) and Sandan (3rd Dan) from Yutaka Yaguchi (8th Dan, ISKF), and Yondan (4th Dan), Go dan (5th), Rokudan (6th Dan), and Nanadan (7th Dan) from Shihan Kousaku Yokota (8th Dan, ASAI). Sensei Johnson has instructed in dojos located in San Jose, Redwood City and Sacramento. He is a certified judge and ASAI instructor.

Dr. Johnson lives in Grass Valley California and practices as a psychotherapist.
