I think that after 54 years of karate training I am entitled to opinions about what it is we love, and at times, what we love to hate, in karatedo.
I have stories, opinions, and some instructional suggestions to pass on to others who might be interested. The over all goal is to share some of the thread that has run through my life.
I would not call myself an expert, or a Master, or even a gifted athlete for that matter. Instead, I have been a plodder and a slogger. I’m the guy who would never give up or give in. What I ever lacked in skill I made up for in determination. I believe that this attitude is a must in the practice of karate.
If what I share in this blog is useful, then consider it. If you are teaching, add it to your curriculum. If you disagree or if you find yourself offended, that is okay. Please recognize, however, that I am too old for keyboard budo, and, quite frankly, I cannot (nor do I wish to) type very fast.
Even though I have recently finished a book, I am proceeding here with a beginner’s mind, backed up with 55 years of notes and personal journals related to karatedo.
So, let’s get started. Welcome to Sensei’s Reflections.
I have had the privilege and honor to train with Johnson sensei for the past 10 years. I have trained in the martial arts for over four decades. It has not been alwyes an easy journey for me. It has been love and hate relationship with Karate and the martial arts in general. I have contemplated quitting karate many times in my life.
Johnson Sensei have seen my struggles and without saying much to me guided me somehow back to the path “the Do” , the way. For this I owe him my gratitude.
Karate is like stepping into a river, ” no man steps in to a river twice”. When a person steps into a river and steps out and steps back in a second later, the river is not the same river and the person is not the same person. My karate practice yesterday will differ from my karate practice today, Karate has changed so have I since yesterday.
It is a lifelong journey in pursuit of mastering the art, only few will achive it. The rest of us will enrich our lives from this journey in more ways than we realize.
I thank Johnson Sensei for all that he have contributed to my life.
