Herum Sensei began studying martial arts and was promoted to Shodan in Tan Soo Do in 1982. He received Shodan from the International Karate Association (1987) and then the International Shotokan Karate Association (2000). He has been training with Johnson Sensei since 2008 and was promoted to Nidan in 2012 and Sandan in 2015 through ASAI.

Herum Sensei is the head instructor at Quail Creek Dojo in the Tuscon area. Sierra Shotokan supports this affiliate dojo.
